The Leviathans occupy a unique position in the bestiary. They are not monsters in the traditional sense — they are something older, something that existed before the current order of creation. God made them first, found them too dangerous and too hungry, and locked them away in Purgatory before creating everything else. When they were accidentally released in Season 7, they represented a threat unlike anything the Winchesters had faced before: intelligent, virtually indestructible, and organized around a plan to turn humanity into livestock.
Why They Matter
The Leviathans represent the show's most direct commentary on corporate power and systemic exploitation. Under Dick Roman's leadership, they did not attack humanity through violence — they infiltrated human systems, bought companies, manipulated the food supply, and worked to make humans compliant and fattened for consumption. Their plan was more terrifying than any individual monster because it operated at a systemic level, using the mechanisms of capitalism and corporate America as the delivery system for humanity's enslavement.
Weaknesses
Their near-total invulnerability is what makes them truly frightening. Borax stuns them temporarily. Decapitation incapacitates them if the head and body are kept separate. But only the specific bone-of-a-righteous-mortal weapon can kill them permanently. This weapon requires components that are extremely difficult to obtain and assemble, making the Leviathans the hardest creatures in the bestiary to permanently destroy.
