Effective Against

Demon

The devil's trap is a sigil — typically a pentagram enclosed in a circle with specific binding symbols — that immobilizes any demon that enters it or is underneath it. It is one of the most powerful defensive tools available to hunters, capable of holding even high-ranking demons in place indefinitely as long as the trap remains intact.

Usage

Devil's traps are typically painted, drawn, or carved onto floors, ceilings, or other surfaces. A demon who steps onto a trap is instantly bound and cannot leave the circle until the trap is broken (even scratching a line through the paint is sufficient to break it). Traps can also be placed on ceilings — a demon entering a room may not look up and can be caught unaware. Bobby Singer had devil's traps painted under rugs throughout his house and tattooed on the underside of his baseball cap.

The most common placement is under a rug at an entrance or in an interrogation area. Traps can be drawn with any material — paint, chalk, blood, marker — as long as the sigil is accurate and unbroken. Some hunters get devil's traps tattooed on their bodies as anti-possession wards (this variant prevents a demon from entering the tattooed person rather than trapping one).

Limitations

The trap only works on demons. It has no effect on angels, monsters, ghosts, or other entities. The trap must be physically intact — any break in the line releases the trapped demon. Extremely powerful demons may be held less securely, and some can manipulate nearby objects or people to break the trap from within. Placing a trap requires advance preparation; it is not useful in an unexpected encounter.

Real-World Basis

Binding circles and protective sigils appear throughout Western occult tradition. The Key of Solomon (Clavicula Salomonis), a medieval grimoire, contains elaborate circles designed to summon and bind demons. The pentagram as a protective symbol has a complex history — in early Christian tradition it represented the five wounds of Christ; in later occult tradition, it became associated with binding and protection against evil. Supernatural's devil's trap design draws from multiple occult sources, combining the pentagram with Enochian-style binding symbols.
