Shapeshifters are one of the more common threats encountered by hunters, and one of the hardest to detect until the damage is already done. These creatures can assume the exact physical form of any human being, copying every detail down to fingerprints and dental records. A shapeshifter can replace someone in their daily life and fool family, friends, and coworkers for extended periods.
Appearance & Abilities
In their natural state, shapeshifters appear human. Their true nature only becomes apparent during the transformation process or through specific detection methods. The traditional shifting process is violent and time-consuming — the creature literally sheds its skin, teeth, and nails, leaving behind a pile of biological material while growing an entirely new exterior. This process takes several minutes and is extremely painful, which is why shifters typically do it in private.
Later seasons introduced Alpha Shifter offspring capable of shifting almost instantaneously without the shedding process. These advanced shifters are far more dangerous as they can change forms in seconds, even mid-conversation.
Beyond the physical disguise, shapeshifters gain access to their template's memories and mannerisms by making physical contact. This makes their impersonation nearly flawless. They can be detected by a retinal flare visible on camera (their eyes reflect light differently) and their inability to tolerate silver.
In Supernatural
Shapeshifters first appeared in Season 1, Episode 6, "Skin." A shifter in St. Louis was taking the forms of various men to attack their loved ones, framing the real people for violent crimes. It impersonated Dean, leading to Dean being placed on the FBI's Most Wanted list — a plot thread that persisted for several seasons. The shapeshifter was killed with silver bullets.
The Alpha Shapeshifter appeared in Season 6 as part of the "Mother of All" storyline. This being, the progenitor of all shapeshifters, was significantly more powerful than ordinary shifters and could change forms instantly. Shapeshifters also appeared in Season 9's "Ask Jeeves," set in a murder-mystery mansion scenario.
Real-World Folklore
Shapeshifting is one of the most universal concepts in world mythology. Nearly every culture has traditions of beings — divine, magical, or monstrous — that can change form. In European folklore, the concept overlaps heavily with werewolf legends, selkie stories (seal-people of Scottish and Irish tradition), and the Scandinavian concept of "hamrammr" (shape-strong), referring to warriors who could take animal form.
Supernatural's version of the shapeshifter draws most directly from the doppelgänger tradition of Germanic folklore, where a double of a living person appears as an omen or acts with malicious intent. The show grounds this in a biological rather than mystical framework — the shifter is a physical creature that literally builds a new body rather than casting an illusion.
Weaknesses
Silver in any form is lethal to shapeshifters. Silver bullets are the most practical method, but silver blades and even silver jewelry pressed against their skin will cause burning. Their eyes produce a distinctive retinal flare on camera, which is the most reliable detection method. During the shedding process they are extremely vulnerable, as the transformation leaves them weakened and immobile for several minutes.
