Monsters are the most diverse category in the bestiary. They are physical, living (or undead) creatures that occupy the natural world alongside humans. Unlike ghosts, they have tangible bodies. Unlike demons, they are not possessing spirits. Unlike angels, they are not cosmic soldiers. They are creatures — born, spawned, or infected — that survive by preying on humans in various ways.
Origins
In the Supernatural cosmology, most monster species were created by Eve, the "Mother of All Monsters" (not to be confused with the biblical Eve). Eve was an ancient being who existed in Purgatory and was responsible for spawning the first generation of each monster type — the Alphas. These Alphas then propagated their species through biting, breeding, or other means. The Alphas are the oldest and most powerful of each species, and all members of a species are connected to their Alpha through a psychic network.
Common Traits
Despite their diversity, monsters share certain characteristics. Most require some form of human consumption — blood, flesh, organs, life force, or other biological material. Most are physically stronger and more durable than humans. Most have a specific, often narrow vulnerability — a particular material or method that can kill them when nothing else works. And most can blend into human society to varying degrees, which is what makes them dangerous.
The Ethical Question
Supernatural regularly grapples with the ethics of hunting monsters. Some monsters — like Garth's werewolf pack or certain vampires — actively choose not to harm humans. The kitsune Amy Pond killed only to save her sick child. The rugaru Jack Montgomery had not yet harmed anyone when the Winchesters arrived. The show asks repeatedly whether a creature's nature condemns it, or whether choice and behavior should determine its fate. The answers are rarely simple.
