Vetalas are predatory creatures that superficially resemble vampires — they feed on human blood and have enhanced physical abilities. However, they are a distinct species with different origins, different hunting patterns, and different weaknesses. Their most notable behavioral trait is that they always hunt in pairs, working in coordinated tandem to capture and subdue prey.

In Supernatural

Vetalas appeared in Season 7, Episode 11, "Adventures in Babysitting." Two vetalas, appearing as attractive young women, were hunting truck drivers at a truck stop. They would lure individual men, subdue them with a venomous bite that left the victim paralyzed but conscious, and then feed over a period of days. Sam and Dean tracked them down after another hunter went missing investigating the same case. The vetalas had to be killed by stabbing them with a silver knife and then twisting the blade — a specific method that differs from standard silver-kills-monsters rules.

Real-World Folklore

The vetala (also baital or betal) is a significant figure in Hindu mythology and Sanskrit literature. In traditional lore, vetalas are spirits that inhabit and reanimate corpses. They are associated with cremation grounds and cemeteries. The most famous vetala story is the Baital Pachisi (Twenty-Five Tales of the Vetala), a frame narrative in which King Vikramaditya must capture a vetala that tells him riddles while hanging from a tree.

In Hindu tradition, vetalas are not simply monsters — they possess vast knowledge of the past, present, and future and can be powerful allies if properly commanded. They are also tricksters, using their stories and riddles to test the wisdom and virtue of those who encounter them. Supernatural strips away the intellectual and trickster elements, reducing the vetala to a blood-feeding predator, which is a significant departure from the source material.

Weaknesses

Silver knife to the heart, with the blade twisted after insertion. This specific technique is critical — a standard stab wound, even with silver, even to the heart, will not kill a vetala. The twist is what finishes them. Their venom paralyzes but does not kill immediately, giving a window for rescue if the victim is found in time.
