Hinduism encompasses one of the world's most complex and extensive mythological systems, with thousands of years of development across the Indian subcontinent. Supernatural's engagement with Hindu mythology is relatively limited compared to its use of European and Judeo-Christian sources, but several notable creatures and concepts appear.

Vetala

The vetala is the most directly adapted Hindu creature in the show. In the original Sanskrit traditions, the vetala is a complex figure — a spirit that inhabits corpses, possesses vast knowledge, and features prominently in the Baital Pachisi story cycle. Supernatural reduces the vetala to a blood-drinking predator, losing the intellectual and narrative dimensions of the original.

Ganesh

The god Ganesh appeared in "Hammer of the Gods" (Season 5) as one of the pagan deities gathered to discuss the Judeo-Christian Apocalypse. Ganesh — the elephant-headed god of wisdom, beginnings, and obstacle removal — is one of the most widely worshipped deities in Hinduism. His portrayal in the episode was brief and he was killed by Lucifer, which was controversial among Hindu viewers.

Kali

The goddess Kali played a more substantial role in "Hammer of the Gods," depicted as a powerful and fierce deity with a romantic history with Gabriel/Loki. In Hindu tradition, Kali is the goddess of time, destruction, and empowerment — a complex figure who destroys evil forces. She is one of the few pagan gods who survived the episode, reflecting her mythological significance.
