Changelings are parasitic creatures that replace human children. The mother changeling kidnaps real children and replaces them with her offspring, which mimic the appearance of the stolen child. These copies then feed on the mother of the household while maintaining the illusion of normality. The real children are kept alive but hidden, as the changeling offspring require the original child to survive in order to maintain their disguise.

Appearance & Abilities

Changeling young perfectly replicate the physical appearance of the children they replace. In their true form, however, they appear as pale, hairless humanoid creatures with hollow eyes and round, lamprey-like mouths designed for feeding. This true form is visible in mirrors and reflective surfaces, which is the primary method of detection.

They feed by latching onto the skin of the mother figure in the household and draining synovial fluid — the lubricating fluid found in joints. Victims develop unexplained bruises, joint pain, and a slowly wasting condition that is difficult to diagnose medically. The feeding marks resemble circular bruises or rashes.

In Supernatural

Changelings appeared in Season 3, Episode 2, "The Kids Are Alright." Dean visited an old flame, Lisa Braeden, and her son Ben, suspecting Ben might be his child. Meanwhile, children in the neighborhood had been subtly changed — mothers reported that their kids seemed "off," behaving unusually. Investigation revealed a mother changeling had been kidnapping children and replacing them with her parasitic offspring. The real children were found caged in an abandoned house. Dean killed the mother changeling with fire, which caused all her offspring to revert to their true forms and die.

Real-World Folklore

The changeling is one of the most widespread and persistent motifs in European folklore, appearing in Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Scandinavian, German, and Slavic traditions. The core story is remarkably consistent: fairies or other supernatural beings steal a human baby and leave one of their own in its place. The changeling child may appear sickly, cry constantly, have an unusual appetite, or simply feel "wrong" to the parents.

Historically, changeling beliefs are believed to have been an explanation for children with developmental disabilities, failure to thrive, or conditions that caused sudden behavioral changes. The folklore prescribed various tests and remedies — some horrifyingly cruel — to force the fairies to return the stolen child. Supernatural adapts the concept by replacing the fairy element with a biological parasitic creature while maintaining the core horror of a child who is not quite right.

Weaknesses

The mother changeling must be killed with fire — destroying the mother kills all her offspring simultaneously. The changeling young are individually vulnerable as well, but killing them one by one is impractical when the mother can simply produce more. The real children must be found and freed, as they will die if left in captivity too long. Detection relies on reflective surfaces — mirrors, windows, polished metal — which reveal the true form.
